After the Outside Tour had taken in America, UK and Europe, ending in Paris in February 1996, there was a break for a few months before it continued to Japan in June. There were seven shows in total taking in the cities of Tokyo, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Osaka, Kokura and Fukuoka the latter couple of which Bowie had never played in before.

All of the venues were seated (no queuing!) majority of them being small concert halls with a capacity of 2000-3000. Tokyo and Osaka were slight exceptions being somewhat larger, each holding approx 8000-10000. The band had reduced in size for this part of the tour with the notable disappearance of Carlos Alomar, Peter Schwartz and George Simms. A few songs had also changed, some new ones having been introduced to the set and some older songs being dropped.

Bowie's costume had changed too. Instead of the painters smock look he had a greyish frilly shirt, baggy trousers and a long coat which was ripped allowing the black lining to show through. It looked as if it was made of velvet or a similar fabric. He also wore his high heeled boots and his hair had a distinct tint of red in it.
